Tight security cordon around Tanjung Batu

TANJUNG LABIAN: The army and the police have cordoned off an area around a community hall in the seaside village of Tanjung Batu, as reports emerged of the sighting of armed men in military fatigues.

Some villagers were unable to leave the security cordon and others were unable to get back into village

As of 2pm, the villagers were still kept out of the area.

Apart from the possible presence of armed men, no further details were available from the police as to reason for the tight cordon.

Tanjung Baru is 30km from the place where the self-styled successor to the Sulu Sultanate Raja Muda Agbimuddin Kiram has been holed up since Feb 9.

Meanwhile, Kunak has become virtually a ghost town with outlets such as KFC, Petronas and other shops closed and the police stations in darkness since reports emerged that armed intruders were spotted in the town on Saturday.
