Bus driver charged with reckless driving

NIBONG TEBAL: A bus driver who was in crutches claimed trial in a magistrate’s court here to a charge of reckless driving which resulted in the death of two of his passengers.

Kamarruddin Derais, 51, from Kampung Sempeneh Seberang, Batu Kurau, was charged with driving the bus recklessly at KM150.6 of the North-South Expressway (north bound) on Dec 21 last year at 6.15am.

Factory workers Nurul Nadhirah Sudin, 21, and Samsiah Hasan, 23, died in the accident.

He was charged under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act which carries a jail term of up to 10 years and a maximum fine of RM20,000.

Magistrate Siti Salwa Jaafar set bail at RM12,000 and suspended his driving licence until the end of proceedings.

She then set April 2 for mention.

DPP Nur Farhana Hashim prosecuted while Kamarruddin was unrepresented.

Kamarruddin, who had his right leg wrapped in bandage following amputation, appeared calm in court.

It was reported that the bus overturned after colliding with a car. Sixteen other factory workers in the bus were injured.

The bus was carrying workers from Batu Kurau to the Canon Electronics (M) Sdn Bhd factory in Prai.
