Lahad Datu: Groups protest outside Malaysian embassy in Manila

By JOSEPH SIPALAN

PUTRAJAYA: Groups have gathered in front of the Malaysian embassy in the Philippines to protest against Tuesday morning's strike against armed insurgents holed up in Lahad Datu, Sabah.

The embassy closed early Tuesday as the groups formed outside.

Tweets posted by ABS-CBN News Channel about two hours after Malaysian armed forces launched its strike on the Sulu insurgents, showed protesters holding up banners demanding that Malaysia pursue a peaceful solution to the issue.

The groups are calling for justice for the "Tausug martyrs" - believed to be a reference to the dozen or so insurgents killed in earlier fighting - and for the defence of the Sulu Sultanate's ancestral claim over Sabah.

ABS-CBN also tweeted that among the protesters were militant groups. Police have been deployed to maintain order, making sure that protesters do not get too close to the embassy.
