Courts says Anwar can cite Ibrahim Ali for contempt of court

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court here has granted leave to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who wanted to cite Perkasa president Datuk Ibrahim Ali and writer Zainuddin Salleh for contempt of court for allegedly scandalising his trial judge in his defamation suit.
Justice John Louis O'Hara made the order after he found that there was a prima facie proven for the alleged contempt.
Justice O'Hara made the decision in the presence of all parties when the case was brought before him Tuesday.
He later fixed March 21 for hearing.
Counsel R. Sivarasa acted for Anwar, Natisha Zainol Rashid for Ibrahim and Senior Federal Counsel Al Saifi Hashim for the Attorney-General's Chambers.
(The AG Chambers was invited by the court in this application to act as an amicus curiae to assist the court without being a party in the case).
Earlier, Natisha informed the court that Ibrahim would make an apology to to the court on the issue.
"We will make an apology on behalf of Perkasa," she said.
She also confirmed that Ibrahim was the president of Perkasa.
On Feb 14, Anwar had made an application for leave from the court to commit both parties to prison over the publication of an article in the Perkasa website on Jan 7.
Sivarasa said Anwar was seeking a warrant of committal for contempt of court allegedly committed by the two parties.
He said the article had make scurrilous and personal attacks on a High Court judge while a decision to be delivered by the judge in a RM50mil defamation case filed by Anwar against Utusan Melayu (M) Bhd was pending.
They had sought for the matter to be heard before a new judge and not the trial judge implicated in the article, hence the case was registered before Justice O'Hara.
