Anwar files RM100mil suit against Utusan, TV3 over reports alleging links to Lahad Datu intrusion
KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (pix) has filed a RM100mil defamation suit against Utusan Melayu (Malaysia) Bhd, Sistem Televisyen Malaysia Bhd (TV3) and three others over news reports allegedly linking him to the armed intrusion in Sabah.
The suit was filed at the KL High Court civil registry at 10.30am Friday, through Messrs Daim & Gammy.
Anwar, 66, named Utusan and its editor Datuk Abdul Aziz Ishak as the first and second defendants respectively, and TV3, its group managing editor Datuk Shahruddin Abdul Latif and its Bulletin Utama news editor Ing Boon Seng as the third, fourth and fifth defendants, respectively.
His lawyer N. Surendran said Anwar applied for an injunction to restrain the defendants from publishing or broadcasting defamatory words against him.
On Thursday, Anwar denied meeting the self-style Sulu Sultan or having any involvement in the attacks on the east coast of Sabah, where Malaysian security forces have been conducting search and mopping up operations after an all-out attack on the group Tuesday.
He told Radyo Inquirer 990AM in an exclusive interview that he had "made it very clear" that he had not met with the Sultan of Sulu who he didn't know, and that there were many claimants (to the throne).
Anwar said the presence of insurgents was "unacceptable" and blamed the local mainstream media for spinning the issue.
Last Friday, the Philippine Daily Inquirer ran a news piece based on Filipino army intelligence sources, which stated that a Sabah politician allied to Anwar had met with the armed intruders.
