KUALA LUMPUR: PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim did not keep his promise to Parti Sosialis Malaysia, forcing the PSM national committee into a huddle to discuss its next move.

The meeting last night was also to review ties with the opposition front and the Pakatan Rakyat's attempt at “three cornering” the PSM in the general election.

Also on the agenda was a request by non-PSM members to stand in the elections under the PSM banner and the prospect of the party contesting in the Cameron Highlands parliamentary seat.

The committee is expected to call a press conference today to announce the outcome of the meeting.

PSM secretary-general S. Arutchelvan said the party was shocked when Anwar announced on Sunday that PKR would field its candidate in Semenyih.

He said the PSM national committee had met Anwar a day earlier, and he had wanted PSM candidates to contest under the PKR banner.

Their candidates had contested under PKR tickets in the 2008 general election, with PSM chairman Dr Mohd Nasir Hashim winning the Kota Damansara state seat and central committee member Dr Michael Jeyakumar triumphing in the Sungai Siput parliamentary seat.

“PSM agreed to contest in Semenyih under the PKR banner but it would be difficult to ask our top leader not to use the PSM party logo,” said Arutchelvan, arguing that Pakatan should at least allow Dr Mohd Nasir to use his party flag.

He said they were also shocked to learn from Anwar that if Dr Jeyakumar stood in Sungai Siput under the PSM banner, DAP would field a candidate against him.

This was a blow to PSM, which was earlier told by DAP to stay away from the Jelapang state seat.
