On air: Edwards interviewing Dr Mohd Nasir on Switchup TV’s ‘GE13 Showdown’. PETALING JAYA: Parti Sosialis Malaysia may go its own way if it is not allowed to use its logo and banner in GE13.
“We are keeping our options open and are still in discussion with Pakatan Rakyat parties
“We would prefer to have a straight fight.
“But if negotiations fail, we may have to go on our own,” PSM chairman Dr Mohd Nasir Hashim said during an interview with SwitchUp.tv's GE13: Showdown programme, hosted by Anne Edwards.
PKR secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution was reported to have said that the Pakatan leadership council had decided that PSM could contest the seats it had requested but only on PKR, DAP or PAS tickets.
PSM candidates had contested under the PKR banner in 2008 as the party had yet to be approved. PSM had also applied to be a Pakatan member but it is still pending.
Dr Mohd Nasir said that the party had fought for almost 10 years to get registered.
“This time we would like to use our own logo in the general election as we want to test the ground.”
He added that the party will be fielding candidates in the parliamentary constituency of Sungai Siput and the Jelapang, Kota Damansara and Semenyih state seats.
“We have contested in those seats before and our rule is that we have to work at least five years there before standing in the area. We are not parachute candidates,” he said.
When asked about its chances, Dr Mohd Nasir said: “There is a good chance, as we have done our job and do not have a vested interest. Socialism is still relevant as capitalism makes the rich get richer and creates an economic crisis as the poor suffer.”
