GE13: Selangor - Perkasa's Zulkifli to contest in Shah Alam as 'friend of BN'
By TEH ENG HOCK
SHAH ALAM: Perkasa vice-president Datuk Zulkifli Noordin has become the first candidate named under the "Friends of Barisan Nasional" banner for the May 5 general election.
Zulkifli, who is the outgoing Kulim-Bandar Baharu MP, will be contesting in the Shah Alam parliamentary constituency.
Other big guns named for Selangor include Datuk Seri Mohd Zin Mohamed (Sepang), Datuk Seri Noh Omar (Tanjung Karang), Datuk Yap Pian Hon (Serdang), Datuk Donald Lim (Selayang), A. Kohilan Pillay (Puchong) and S. Murugesan (Kota Raja).
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who unveiled the candidates at a packed room at the Selangor Umno headquarters here Tuesday, pointed out that about 80% of the candidates were new faces.
"This is what the people want and expect. This is the best line-up we can put forward. We want to form a strong government," he said.
In Selangor, Umno will contest nine parliamentary and 35 state seats; MCA, seven parliamentary and 14 state seats; MIC, four parliamentary and three state seats; Gerakan, one parliamentary and three state seats; and PPP, one state seat.
The remaining parliamentary seat will go to Zulkifli as "friends of Barisan", said Najib.
"After five years as the Opposition in Selangor, we have gone through a bitter experience and learnt from our past mistakes.
"Now, I can say Selangor Barisan is ready, not just to contest and unveil our candidates, but ready to win over the trust and confidence of the people," he said.
Najib advised those who missed out on being a candidate to continue serving the party.
"It is normal that not everyone's wishes can be met. But if the party is successful, there will be opportunities to care for the members," he said.
Najib added that Barisan will launch its Selangor manifesto Wednesday at 8pm at the Shah Alam Convention Centre.
Later, Zulkifli dismissed suggestions that his candidacy was related to his position in Perkasa.
"Perkasa is not a party. It is a non-governmental organisation. Barisan is a party, it is my party. I am a Barisan candidate," he said.
Zulkifli is set to face Selangor PAS deputy commissioner Khalid Samad, who is the incumbent Shah Alam MP.
Asked how he planned to topple Khalid, Zulkifli said: "A general will not reveal his strategy before the war".
Zulkifli, who won the Kulim-Bandar Baharu seat in 2008 under PKR, was sacked from the party in 2010 and became an Independent MP.
