MACC pays tribute to Customs Deputy D-G Shaharuddin Ibrahim

PETALING JAYA: Customs Department deputy director-general Datuk Shaharuddin Ibrahim, who was gunned down on Friday, contributed immensely to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's operations.

MACC investigations director Datuk Mustafar Ali said Shaharuddin played an active part in joint operations with enforcement agencies to curb leakages and increase the country's revenues.

“Our deepest condolences to the family. His death is a great loss. He contributed a lot to our operations,” said Mustafar.

Shaharuddin, who headed the customs and internal tax division, was shot dead while being driven to work in Putrajaya.

Two men on a motorcycle approached the car from the left and the pillion rider fired three shots with what is believed to be an automatic weapon.

Police have refuted claims that a suspect was shot dead during follow-up operations to track down the killers.

City CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Ku Chin Wah said these were rumours.

“We are still in the early stages of our investigations and are scrutinising CCTV footage and trying to track down witnesses,” he said yesterday.

It was reported that drug syndicates and gangs were the main suspects while Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak revealed that some parties were unhappy with the department's strict enforcement.

Shaharuddin had been with the Customs Department for more than 30 years and gained a reputation as a drug buster, earning the moniker “Mr Clean”.
