JOHOR BARU: Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman might not be a fluent Mandarin speaker but his smattering command of the language was sufficient to get his message across to the mostly Chinese voters in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah in Gelang Patah.

Describing himself as lau peng you (old friend) to the people in Johor, Abdul Ghani urged voters in the housing estate to give Barisan Nasional a mandate for a better future.

Abdul Ghani, who is contesting the Gelang Patah parliamentary seat against DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang, said Barisan would deliver what it promised in the GE13.

“You want fan rong (prosperity), wen ding (stability) and he ping (peace) in Johor and we should not change that to something which is unproven,” Abdul Ghani said to loud cheers from the crowd.

He said as a Johor Mentri Besar for almost 19 years, he knew that when it came to politics, Johoreans were zhong yong (moderate).

At the event, he was sporting enough to join his wife Datin Paduka Professor Dr Jamilah Ariffin on stage in singing two Mandarin oldies with minus one music ai de li wu (Present of Love) and tian mi mi (Sweet Love).

The couple was accompanied by background singers including the Skudai state seat candidate MCA's Liang Ah Chy who is contesting against incumbent DAP Dr Boo Cheng Hau and Gelang Patah MCA division chief Jason Teoh.
