GE13: First-time rep proposes shadow Cabinet in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: First-time Opposition assemblyman Datuk Jelani Hamdan is proposing for a shadow Cabinet to monitor the performance of each Sabah state ministry.

Jelani said members of the shadow Cabinet would scrutinise the financial flow of each ministry apart from keeping tabs on each department and ministry's progress.

“If this proposal materialises, we will be able to improve the delivery system of the government so that the ministries will be more vigilant and transparent in their undertakings,” said the Matunggong assemblyman.

Jelani said there were 12 Opposition wakil rakyat elected in the 13th general election, and the number was sufficient to form the shadow Cabinet.

He said the shadow Cabinet was not aimed at taking over the administration of the actual state Cabinet, but to enable people to get better services from the government.

Jelani who defeated Matunggong incumbent Sarapin Magana of Parti Bersatu Sabah by a majority of 320 votes in the recent elections, said he expected the State Legislative Assembly sitting for the next five years to be interesting given that there were now 12 Opposition assemblymen against 48 from Barisan.
