THE Taman Sri Wangi residents in Kapar have had to endure the pungent smell of sewage water overflowing in their area for the past eight months, Tamil Nesan reported.

The residents' representative P. Murugayah, 42, said their many complaints to the Indah Water officials went unheeded.

He said the residents were planning to stage a demonstration against Indah Water for failing to act on their complaints.

They have called on new Kapar MP G. Manivanan to help.

> A 12-year-old was stripped, tied to a tree and beaten by the villagers of a fishing village in Nellore district, Andhra Pradesh, after accusing him of stealing money from a shop, Malaysia Nanban reported. The village panchayat had imposed a fine of Rs10,000 (RM540) on the boy's father.

Though the incident took place on Sunday night, it only came to light on Monday after the boy's father had approached the Kavali police to lodge a complaint.

Police said that the boy, Arigela Pavan, had gone to a nearby shop for a soft drink. He saw an Rs10 (54 sen) note lying on the ground in front of the shop and had picked it up and stuffed it inside his pocket.

The shop owner who saw the boy taking the note caught hold of him and accused him of being responsible for Rs10,000 (RM540) cash missing from his shop. He tied him to a tree and gave him a thrashing.

At the panchayat meeting, village head Govindu, who happened to be the father of the shop owner, imposed a fine of Rs10,000 (RM540) on the boy's father Malyadri for his son's offence.

As per the tradition of the village, Malyadri agreed to pay the penalty and had paid Rs2,000 (RM109) there so that he can continue living in the village. Later, he had gathered the courage to revolt against the panchayat's decision and lodged a police report.
