GE13: Radio deejays begin ‘Kamilah Malaysia’ campaign

PETALING JAYA: A group of radio deejays have initiated a campaign that seeks to turn May 13, a black mark in the country's history, into the start of something far more positive.
The deejays of Red FM, 98.8 FM, Suria FM and Capital FM have banded together for the “Kamilah Malaysia” campaign, which is their bid to unite all Malaysians following the tensions of the 13th general election.
The Star Radio Group deputy chief broadcasting officer Kudsia Kahar said the campaign, which begins on May 13, was just the thing the country needed at a time emotions were running high.
“I hope the campaign will be able to remind all Malaysians that all citizens make up the country and that each and every one of us matter.
“It is also about being together as one and celebrating diversity,” she said.
“May 13 can be known now as the day Malaysians from all walks of life come together,” she said in an interview yesterday.
Kudsia said among the planned activities for the campaign were having Malaysian heroes from different fields as guests on the various radio shows.
They include prominent sports personalities and celebrity chefs.
We are many and we are one: Star Radio Group DJs leading off their campaign with a group shot. “There are also activities planned, where callers can interact with the guests on the topic of unity,” she said.
Kudsia said the campaign would also involve public service announcements as well as the giving-away of T-shirts to lucky listeners.
She added there would also be deejay-swapping among the four stations.
“This is to show that we are one family despite coming from different races and backgrounds,” she said.
She said the deejays would also produce a music video entitled Mulanya Disini, a popular hit in the 1980s by local band Freedom, which would be sung in at least five different languages, to signify the country's diversity.
Local celebrity Adibah Noor will be lending her voice.
Kudsia said Malaysians should not have to wait for the National Day or Malaysia Day to unite.
“The campaign is a symbol of a united Malaysia,” she said.
Red FM deejay Azura said the message of the campaign was that all Malaysians were the same.
“We need to teach the people, especially future generations, to be colour blind and that everyone is the same,” she said.
98.8fm deejay May said the campaign was the right step towards instilling unity among Malaysians.
“A hope for a better future can only be built if we are one,” she said.
