PETALING JAYA: PKR deputy president Azmin Ali could have been Selangor Mentri Besar if he wanted, he told reporters on Friday.

“If I wanted it, I could have been MB in 2008.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim approached me after the Permatang Pauh by-election and asked if I wanted the role,” he claimed during a press conference at PKR HQ here.

Azmin, who is also Gombak MP, was responding to rumours that he was gunning for the Selangor MB role and was prepared to quit the party if it wasn't given to him.

“I wouldn't put my political standing before the party. The rumours are vicious lies,” he said.

On the role of MB, the Bukit Antarabangsa assemblyman said Selangor demanded a “responsive leader”.

“They need an MB who has caliber. An MB who will open his door to the rakyat.”

He had earlier said the next MB should not be a lame duck who was easily led by others.

Many saw this as a thinly veiled swipe at the popular Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, who has been long been rumoured to be in a power struggle with Azmin.
