KUALA LUMPUR: MCA can convene an extraordinary general meeting now before its annual general meeting if it wants to deliberate on the urgent issue of Chinese representation in the government, said MCA Speaker Datuk Yik Phooi Hong.

"It can hold the EGM first to discuss the matter. But whatever it is, let's wait for the outcome of the Presidential Council meeting tomorrow," he said after attending the Kojadi study loan presentation at Wisma MCA here Friday.

MCA leaders had decided not to accept any government posts at state and federal levels after the party failed to secure as many seats in the recent polls compared to 2008.

However, many quarters have urged the party to rescind its decision.

Party president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek had taken the lead and relinquished all government posts, but has kept mum on his party post despite pressure to step down.

In the recent elections, MCA managed to win seven parliamentary and 11 state seats, compared to 15 parliamentary and 32 state seats in 2008. On another matter, Yik said MCA polls could be held as early as October, taking into account it would need at least four months to convene and complete elections at grassroots level.

"Anyhow, it must be held this year, the latest in December. It doesn't matter if we expedite it or not, because it's a difference of one or two months," he said.

In 2011, the party amended its constitution to enable postponement of party polls to six months after the conclusion of the general election. - Bernama
