GE13: Raja Nong Chik – I lost because of character assassination, not to a 'Chinese tsunami'

By BAVANI M

KUALA LUMPUR: It was not a 'Chinese tsunami' but character assassination in social media that caused the defeat of Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin in the 13th general election, admitted the former Federal Territories minister.

"People are talking about a Chinese tsunami, but I say it was character assassination that led to my defeat,” said Raja Nong Chik.

He also said he would never blame Chinese voters eventhough he lost in the Chinese-majority constituency.

"It was a culmination of articles on the Internet disparaging me and my family that caused me to lose," said Raja Nong Chik.

"They targetted my father, my daughter and even accused me of bringing in phantom voters into Lembah Pantai, when all I ever did was service the rakyat and bring a clean campaign," he said in his first press conference since his defeat in the polls on May 5.

Raja Nong Chik said his conscience was clear and thanked the 29,000 voters who had voted for him.

"For now I will continue my work as the capacity of Lembah Pantai Umno head, and service the people here, which is what I had been doing even before I became a minister," he added.

He also said that rumours about fighting at the Lembah Pantai tallying centre were not true.

Raja Nong Chik also denied there were attempts to smuggle in ballot boxes into the tallying centre.

"I already knew had I lost, so there was no attempt to smuggle in ballot boxes into the tallying centre when counting was already finished.

"At the end of the day, all these personal attacks probably influenced fence-sitters to vote against me," he said.

Raja Nong Chik said that he would probably be taking legal action against Nurul Izzah for the allegations made against him and his family.

Nurul received 31,008 votes, beating Raja Nong Chik with a majority of 1,870 votes.
