GE13: Five new faces in Sabah cabinet

KOTA KINABALU: Gerakan vice president Datuk Raymond Tan has been named deputy chief minister for the Chinese quota in place of Datuk Yee Moh Chai, as five new faces were brought into the state cabinet by Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman.

Tan, who had previously served as deputy chief minister between 2004 and 2008, replaces Yee who lost his bid to defend his Api Api state seat in the recent polls.

Tan, who retained his Industrial Development Ministry portfolio, was sworn in before Yang diPertua Negeri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin at Istana Negeri together with Parti Bersatu Sabah president Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan and Sabah Umno secretary Datuk Yahya Hussin for the two other deputy chief minister posts for non-Muslim bumiputras and Muslim bumiputras respectively.

Pairin was retained as Infrastructure Minister while Yahya remained as Agriculture and Food Industries Minister.

Musa also appointed long-serving assistant minister and PBS vice president Datuk Radin Malleh as Rural Development Minister and promoted Umno's Datuk Jainab Ahmad to Community Development and Consumers Affairs Minister.

Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) secretary general Datuk Teoh Chee Kang was brought in as Special Affairs Minister, replacing the Minister in Chief Minister's Department portfolio last held by Datuk Nasir Tun Sakaran.

Musa said Nasir had been made the chairman of the Sabah Economic Development Corporation (Sedco) with ministerial status.

Other new faces included Upko's Datuk Siringan Gubat who was made Resource Development and Information Technology Minister while Umno's Datuk Tawfiq Titingan was appointed Youth and Sports Minister.

Musa also retained Datuk Masidi Manjun in the Tourism, Culture and Environment portfolio while Datuk Hajiji Mohd Nor was retained as state Local Government and Housing Minister.

Describing his cabinet as a "strong, dynamic and cohesive team", comprised of people who would be able to work together in planning and executing the state's development agenda.

"We believe the appointments of those previously in the cabinet will be able to provide continuity through their experiences while the new members will inject fresh new ideas and expertise," Musa added.

He said Teo's duties as Special Function Minister would be announced soon, and added that the State Assembly Speaker and Deputy Speaker would be take their oaths of office over the next few days as well.

Musa also named 18 other assistant state ministers.
