Jais nabs 13 suspected Al-Arqam followers at KLIA

SEPANG: Thirteen people were detained by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) to facilitate investigations into the teachings of the outlawed Al-Arqam movement.

The suspects, one of whom was carrying a baby girl, were picked up upon arrival at the KL International Airport (KLIA) here on Friday.

Jais director Datuk Marzuki Hussin said the suspects, who were among 35 Malaysians deported by the Saudi Arabian Government, had arrived this afternoon from Jeddah.

"They were detained for investigations and will be released on bail by Jais," he said when contacted by Bernama.

Previously, Jais had detained 13 people from the same group, in connection with the seizure of reading material linked to the Al-Arqam, such as books, pamphlets and brochures.

They were detained under the Selangor Islamic Religious Enactment as, according to the Selangor Mufti, the Al-Arqam has deviated from the teachings of the Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah. - Bernama
