Azizan remains unconscious but stable

GEORGE TOWN: Former Kedah mentri besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak has remained unconscious after undergoing surgery at the Penang Hospital to amputate his legs below the knee.

Azizan, 69, who suffered from diabetes, had to undergo the amputation as his legs were infected.

His press secretary, Mohd Helmi Khalid, said Friday that the Sungai Limau state assemblyman's condition was stable, following the operation at 11.30pm on Thursday.

According to him, Azizan was currently warded at the hospital's intensive care unit while the family was in discussion, whether he should be brought home to continue treatment in Kedah.

Azizan, who is also Kedah PAS Commissioner, was transferred to the Penang Hospital on Wednesday from the Kedah Medical Centre when his legs became infected on Monday.

Kedah Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah, who together with Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir visited Azizan Friday, said the Kedah Government would bear the medical costs for Azizan's treatment.

Meanwhile, a Penang Hospital media relations source said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak was expected to visit Azizan at 1pm Saturday.
