IPOH: Backhoe driver M. Vickneswaran (pic) thought he had dug up two pieces of scrap metal during an upgrading project at the Ipoh Cargo Terminal (ICT) but as he wiped off the soil from the metal objects, they turned out to be two bombs.

The 42-year-old Vickneswaran said he discovered the bombs at the terminal at about 9.40am yesterday.

The bombs were small but weighed about 15kg, he told reporters.

“I used to be with the armed forces in my younger days so I was not anxious about handling the bombs.

“I quickly alerted my superior about my discovery,” he said, adding that the management then called the police for assistance.

ICT Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Sabtiah Abu Kassim said a police bomb squad detonated the devices at the site.

“They also inspected the surrounding area and confirmed that there were no more buried explosives at the yard,” she said. “This is the second time explosive items have been discovered at the cargo terminal after the first experience some 13 years ago.”

Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Sum Chang Keong confirmed that the two bombs were “old” but police had yet to determine whether they were from the Second World War.
