GE13: DJs keep up momentum via music video

PETALING JAYA: A group of deejays who banded together for a campaign to unite Malaysians is keeping up the momentum through a music video about the spirit of togetherness.

Deejays from Red FM, 98.8 FM, Suria FM and Capital FM yesterday lent their voices to the recording of Mulanya Disini, originally a hit in the 1980s by the band Freedom.

“There is no such thing as a clear division among races. Race does not define who we are or how we think. We're all Malaysians,” said Red FM deejay Terry Ong.

Suria FM deejay Linda Onn concurred and expressed hope that listeners would appreciate the message conveyed in the song.

“We have been living in harmony for so many years as one family, regardless of religion and race. Let us hold on to this principle for a better Malaysia,” she said.

The recording is part of the “Kamilah Malaysia” campaign by Star RFM, which seeks to rebrand May 13 from a black mark in history to the dawn of something positive.

Parts of the original four-minute song, which was written in Bahasa Malaysia, were translated into at least five other languages to reflect diversity.

The song carries the message of unity with the lines “Sama sama gunung didaki, sama sama turun ke lembah sepi, suka duka bersama dirasai.” (Together we climb the mountains, head down to lonely valleys, and share our joys and sorrows.)

Meanwhile, 98.8 FM deejays Jiun and Yin Yin hope to share with listeners their belief that every Malaysian is part of a big family.

Yin Yin voiced hope that Malaysians would carry on caring for fellow citizens.

Artiste Adibah Noor also pitched in, saying that it was a timely call for Malaysians. “Our political differences is not an excuse to forget that we are all Malaysians. We must stand together,” she said.

Among the activities planned for the “Kamilah Malaysia” campaign, which begins on May 13, is to invite Malaysian heroes to speak on Star RFM's various radio shows.

The list of guest speakers will include sports personalities and celebrity chefs. During the show, callers can also interact with them on the topic of unity.

There will also be public service announcements and T-shirts for lucky listeners, among others.
