GE13: ‘EGM can be held to deliberate urgent issue’

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA can convene an extraordinary general meeting before its annual general meeting if it wants to deliberate the urgent issue of Chinese representation in the government, said party speaker Datuk Yik Phooi Hong.

“It can hold the EGM first to discuss the matter. But whatever it is, let's wait for the outcome of the presidential council meeting tomorrow (today),” he told reporters after attending Kojadi's study loan presentation at Wisma MCA here yesterday.

MCA leaders had decided not to accept any government post at state and federal levels following the results of the recent general election, which was worse than their performance in 2008.

In the just-concluded May 5 polls, MCA only managed to win seven parliamentary and 11 state seats, compared to 15 parliamentary and 32 state seats in 2008.

Party president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek had taken the lead to relinquish all his appointed posts and said that he would not contest in the party elections.

There are quarters who have urged the party to rescind its decision.

On another matter, Yik said the impending party polls could be held as early as October, considering that it would take at least four months to convene and complete elections at grassroots levels. - Bernama
