EC: GE13 results to be gazetted this month

PUTRAJAYA: The results of last Sunday's 13th general election will be gazetted this month, after which those who are not happy with it have 21 days to file their petitions.

Election Commission (EC) deputy chairman Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar said the EC secretariat was now receiving the Form 16, on the declaration of the election results, from the 222 parliamentary and 505 state constituencies contested nationwide.

"We will check every digit that was written and we will gazette them. Nevertheless, the results that were announced by the Returning Officers that night is final and anyone who is not happy, use the legal channel to protest,' he told reporters at the EC headquarters here on Saturday.

Wan Ahmad said Article 118 of the Federal Constitution had clearly stated that anyone who disagreed with the election results could file a petition at the High Court.

He hit out at people who refused to accept the general election results and instigated the people, especially the young generation, with lies about the EC and the running of the election.

He said the commission would seek the advise of legal experts on the action the could be taken against such quarters.

"After filing the petition, gather all evidence, get the best lawyers, debate in court to protest or question the election results, not by instigating the people, especially the young people, to go to the streets by telling lies and defaming the EC.

"How irresponsible can these people be. What is going to happen to the country's democratic process if such political leaders teach the people to not accept the election results made by more than 85 percent of the voters," he added.

Wan Ahmad also questioned the Bar Council and its former president, S. Ambiga, who is Bersih chairman, for not condemning the unlawful action. - Bernama
