PETALING JAYA: The MIC should chart a roadmap to help the Indian community, said Kota Raja MIC division chairman R.S. Maniam.

He stressed on the need for a total revamp and to restrategise the party to ensure its relevance and be the sole voice of the community.

Although MIC performed better this time, he said the results indicated that the party did not fully connect with the middle and upper-class Indians.

“We have been concentrating on the people who came to us for help as well as the poor,” he said in a statement.

“We did not cater to the middle and upper income Indians.”

The MIC won four out of the nine parliamentary seats it contested in the May 5 polls.

Commenting on calls that the party leadership take responsibility for its “poor performance” in the general election, Maniam said MIC should have a gathering of 150 to 200 leaders, both within and outside the party, to brainstorm and chart a roadmap to uplift the community.

“It is time for everyone to unite and work to regain the trust of the Indians towards the party and Barisan Nasional,” he added.

Maniam said Datuk Seri G. Palanivel, who took over the party leadership three years ago, should be given every opportunity to come up with programmes to enhance Indians' support for the Government.

He also said that many party members were willing to serve the people, especially the poor, and this should be looked at.
