KUALA LUMPUR: All Malaysians should be more rational and not let themselves be carried away by their emotions in the aftermath of the general election, say religious groups.

United in their call to preserve peace, the Friendship Group for Inter Religious Service (FGIS) also urged all Malaysians to protect the nation's precious heritage of unity, peace and understanding.

The group was made up of the Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (Abim), Buddhist Maha Vihara, Malaysia Hindu Sanggam, Council of Churches (Federal Territory), Malaysia Gurdwaras Council and the Sathya Sai Baba Central Council of Malaysia as its coordinating secretariat.

The group said following the elections, there were “as usual, winners, losers and diverse sentiments” being expressed.

FGIS adviser Datuk J. Jegathesan said people tended to whole-heartedly believe what they read in social media.

Abim president Amidi Abdul Manan said the group wanted to urge all Malaysians to be more rational and not get carried away with their emotions.

“Those who are trying to cause provocation among the people should stop,” said Amidi during a press conference attended by other group representatives at the St Mary's Cathedral in Brickfields here yesterday.

“We call on all youths, be they Muslims or non-Muslims, to think maturely so that there will not be any racial tension.

“Our unity is our precious asset which must be protected,” he said.

The group, he said, also wanted to avoid incidents in which people were quick to put the blame on a certain race.
