GEORGE TOWN: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak joined a stream of VIPs who visited former Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak at the Penang Hospital.

Najib said: “Although Azizan is from a different party, I respect him as a leader and a friend.”

When asked if the Federal Government would foot Azizan's medical bills, Najib replied: “Tidak ada masalah (No problem).”

Najib was accompanied by his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

Azizan had to undergo surgery to amputate his legs following an infection. He had successfully retained his Sungai Limau seat for the fifth term in the general election.

Earlier, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad arrived at the hospital. He was joined by his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali and son Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir.

Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, his wife PKR president Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Seberang Jaya assemblyman Dr Afif Bahardin and PAS deputy president Mat Sabu also visited Azizan.

Meanwhile, Azizan's press secretary Mohd Helmi Khalid said Azizan's status as the Sungai Limau state assemblyman would not be discussed until he had fully recovered.

He requested for some privacy and space for his boss and family.
