PETALING JAYA: MCA members should not demand for president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek's immediate resignation as it would further weaken the party, said party veteran Tan Sri Dr Fong Chan Onn.

He said Dr Chua should be given time to stabilise the party.

“Members should not insist that Dr Chua step down immediately as this would create instability in the party.

“Dr Chua should be allowed time to work out the schedule of the party elections so that new office-bearers can be elected soon for them to get on with work to set the future direction of the party,” he said yesterday.

Dr Fong, who is the former Alor Gajah MP, pointed out that Dr Chua had already announced that he would not be seeking re-election in the coming party polls.

He also said any decision made by the party, including the non-acceptance of government posts, was a collective decision.

“The outcome of the election results is not because of any one person,” he said.

He urged members to take note of the party's theme Stability Above Chaos and to adhere to the principle.
