Man dies from heart attack during Sultan Azlan Shah Run (Updated)

KUALA KANGSAR: A 46-year-old Italian-American man collapsed seconds after he complained of stomach pain during the Sultan Azlan Shah Run here, and was pronounced dead at the Kuala Kangsar Hospital.

Kuala Kangsar OCPD ACP Abdul Ghafar Mohamad said Paolo Valsecchi, 46, who works at a logistic company, ran about 3.5km before collapsing suddenly at about 7.30am on Sunday.

“Paolo complained of stomach pain to his friend and about 15 seconds later, he collapsed along Jalan Istana, near the Istana Iskandariah's marching field.

“Another participant, a doctor, applied CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) on him for about 15 minutes before police arrived and brought him to the Kuala Kangsar Hospital, where doctors there conducted a full resuscitation on him for about 40 minutes.

“However, he was pronounced dead at about 9.50am,” he told journalists on Sunday.

ACP Abdul Ghafar said Paolo, who was from South Carolina, could have suffered a heart attack although his friends stated that he was fine the previous day.

“He does not have any next-of-kin and his body will be sent to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh for post-mortem on Monday,” he said.

Paulo was living in Kuala Lumpur for the last four years.

Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, who attended the run earlier, also visited the body at the Kuala Kangsar Hospital mortuary.
