Neighbour's knock saves sleeping sisters from fire

KUALA LUMPUR: Two sleeping sisters were saved from a fire after neighbours came knocking at their front door yelling for them to escape.

The fire broke out in the prayer room of their house at 7.45am Sunday.

Neighbours saw smoke coming from the bathroom window of the victim's flat, which was located on the 14th floor of the government quarters in Jalan Duta.

Once the sisters fled, the neighbours also helped stop the fire spreading by using a fire extinguisher before the fire and rescue squad arrived at the scene.

House owner, A.Vijayan, 54, an Information Officer at the Information Communications and Culture Ministry, said during the incident, himself, his wife and son were at the nearby market.

"When we left the house, my eldest and youngest daughters, aged 24 and 18, were still sleeping in their bedrooms.Tthe fire was probably sparked by an oil lamp we left in the prayer room," he said at the scene.

The quarters supervisor said the family would be given a temporary house until a new unit could be allocated. - Bernama
