JULAU: All longhouse folk, whether they support Barisan Nasional, opposition or independents, should close ranks and be united again now that the general election is over and the Gawai Dayak celebration coming up in June.

Julau MP Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum said political discussions should be put on the backburner for any sour ties to mend.

He said this when officiating at a fundraising dinner organised by SK Nanga Meluan’s Parent-Teacher Association at the school hall in Nanga Meluan here on Friday.

It was his first official function since retaining his parliamentary seat for a fourth term with a 5,955-vote majority in last Sunday’s 13th general election.

The PRS vice-president was involved in a three-cornered fight with SWP’s Wong Judat and PKR’s Wong Hong Yu.

Salang said longhouse chiefs too should not feel awkward that some of their followers had not voted for Barisan, adding that the small group concerned should not be sidelined or be treated with disdain.

“Treat them as you would treat all others in your longhouse. This will prevent your longhouse from breaking up which would be very sad,” he said.

He was glad to note that there had not been any untoward incidents in the elections in any rural areas.

On education, Salang again advised parents to co-operate closely with teachers and parent-teacher associations in order for their children to be able to study in the most conducive of atmosphere so that they could produce excellent results.

He said he would continue to offer his usual study incentives to top performers in the UPSR and PMR examinations for children in the constituency. — Bernama
