Teachers union, S’wak Cuepacs seek increase in incentive payments

KUCHING: The Sarawak Bumiputra Teachers Union (KGBS) and Cuepacs Sarawak Division (CSD) want the Federal Government to increase the regional incentive payments and fixed housing allowances for civil servants.

KGBS president Ahmad Malie, who is also CSD secretary, said the regional incentive payment was currently 12% to 22% based on salary scale.

“For example, those in the RM800-RM1,500 salary scale will receive the payment at a rate of 22%. We are proposing an increase of 10% in the rate for each salary scale,” he said in a statement yesterday.

As for the fixed housing allowance, he said it was based on grade and the minimum amount was currently RM180.

“Our proposal is to increase it by RM200 to RM270 per grade. This means that the minimum RM180 will become RM450 with an increase of RM270,” Ahmad said.

“We urge the Government to heed our demand for an increase in the allowances, which have not been reviewed for a long time. We hope our demand will be met for the sake of our welfare,” he said, adding that civil servants in Sarawak had long been hoping for the allowances to be reviewed in line with the rising cost of living.

Meanwhile, Ahmad conveyed his congratulations to Barisan Nasional on its return to power after last Sunday’s 13th general election.

In particular, he congratulated the state Barisan under Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud for contributing the biggest number of seats to the ruling coalition.

“We see the victory as a blessing for civil servants, especially those in Sarawak,” he added.
