24-hour helpline for maids next month

Indonesian maids will soon be able to call a 24-hour helpline to enquire about employment issues.

The helpline, offered by the Foreign Domestic Worker Association for Social Support and Training, will be operational from June 1.

This was announced by association president Seah Seng Choon at a motivational talk attended by close to 500 Indonesian maids.

The association is currently training a group of volunteers to be helpline counsellors and befrienders. Apart from employment issues, the maids can also seek advice on their personal problems.

The helpline will be available in English and Bahasa Indonesia, with other languages, such as Tagalog, a possible inclusion in the future. — The Straits Times / Asia News Network
