Analysts: New headmust revive Gerakan

KUALA LUMPUR: It is imperative that the new president of Gerakan formulate plans for the survival of the party and ensure its relevance in the future, said political analysts.

Universiti Sains Malaysia lecturer Prof Dr Ahmad Atory Hussain said that apart from understanding the needs of party members, the new leader should also inject values and lead members to continue the party's struggles.

“Otherwise, support from the Chinese community will continue to move to DAP,” he said when asked about party president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon's decision to resign on May 16.

Meanwhile, Assoc Prof Dr Sivamurugan Pandian, also from USM, said the party should identify the cause of its defeat.

“The second line of leaders also need to know how to adapt Gerakan's philosophy to the current environment,” he said. - Bernama
