Opposition to focus on 47% of Malaysians who voted for BN
JOHOR BARU: Pakatan Rakyat will focus on gaining the support of the 47% of Malaysians who voted for Barisan Nasional in GE13.
DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang said this would be the Opposition pact's greatest challenge to persuade these voters whom he termed “fence-sitters”.
“We need to win them over in the next general election,” he said at a press conference yesterday.
Earlier, Lim, accompanied by Skudai assemblyman Dr Boo Cheng Hau and Gelang Patah DAP Wanita chief Ng Siam Luang, handed out 1,000 stalks of flowers to women at the Taman Ungku Tun Aminah market in Skudai here in conjunction with Mothers Day.
Asked on his plans for the Gelang Patah constituency, where he is the newly-elected MP, Lim said that he wants to see more development in the area.
On Iskandar Malaysia, he said that Pakatan welcomes any project that benefits the state and the nation as a whole.
Meanwhile, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said Pakatan won the majority of seats and popular votes in Penang, Kelantan and Selangor through a clean campaign and that the issue of race should not be raised now.
“Pakatan won not only the majority of the seats but a majority of the popular votes. We fought a clean campaign and there were no complaints of cheating against Pakatan.
“In Kelantan, PR won 54%, in Selangor 59% and in Penang 68% of the popular vote. That is the reason why Barisan was forced to accept that Pakatan won in those three states. In contrast, Barisan won only 47% of the popular vote and yet won 60% of the parliamentary seats,” he said in a statement.
Guan Eng said that the Prime Minister must stop blaming the Chinese or the DAP for Barisan's failure to win the popular vote.
“All Malaysians especially in the urban areas have shown a clear preference for people-centric policies that makes a difference to the lives of ordinary Malaysians, decided on needs and merit,” he said.
