AMPANG: A taxi driver who tore down about RM500 worth of BN flags was fined RM1,000 by the Magistrate's Court here.

Mohd Yusri Yahaya, 33, pleaded guilty to the charge of vandalising some 90 BN flags under the care of Umno Sri Merpati division chief A. Rahim Md Idris.

He was accused of committing the offence at around 4pm on April 9, along Jalan Pandan Indah across from the Masjid Indah in Ampang Jaya.

According to the facts of the case, complainant A. Rahim was putting up party flags around the Seri Merpati flats when he saw a man tearing down and throwing away several BN flags.

When A. Rahim confronted the man, he fled in a taxi parked nearby.

DPP Goh Ai Rene, said there were no CCTV cameras in the vicinity, but there were several eyewitnesses.

The police were able to identify the perpetrator based on his taxi number plate, which lead to his arrest.

Mohd Yusri, who was unrepresented, pleaded for leniency saying he could not afford a high fine, as he was preparing for his wedding and had a job without fixed income.

He was charged under Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief, punishable by up to two years prison, a fine, or both.

Magistrate Ayuni Izzati Sulaiman fined him RM1,000.
