KUALA LUMPUR: Political parties and candidates who contested in the 13th General Election have to remove all campaign materials by Sunday or risk losing their deposit, said Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof.

He said if the campaign materials were not removed, the RM5,000 deposit for parliamentary candidates and RM3,000 for state legislative candidates, will not be returned.

"I hope the political parties or candidates take responsibility by removing campaign materials no later than 14 days after polling day," he said when contacted Monday.

Umno executive secretary Datuk Ab Rauf Yusoh said Umno and BN component parties are busy removing the campaign materials.

"The removal of campaign materials is progressing well. Umno divisions nationwide have been asked to complete the job by Sunday," he said.

PAS vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar said opposition parties are removing campaign materials and believe it will be completed by Sunday.

Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib said Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will remove the campaign materials after the 14 days period expires.

He said DBKL has sent a notice to all parties involved to remove the campaign materials or risk losing their deposits.

Meanwhile, Weekenders chairman Hisham Mahir welcomes donation of campaign materials that can be used as mattress and pillow for the homeless.

"We hope to distribute the pillows and mattresses to the homeless in a charity programme at Masjid Jamek, Kuala Lumpur on June 6," he said.
