Sibu DAP surprises mothers at market with cup cakes

SIBU: Housewife Minah Muleng, 69, has never celebrated Mother’s Day.

So when Pelawan DAP assemblyman David Wong presented her with a cupcake at the Central Market here yesterday, she was overjoyed.

“I am very happy. This is the first time I received a gift on Mother’s Day,” said Minah who was shopping with her husband, Usop Lawang, 71.

The elderly couple have two sons and two daughters who all have their own families to take care of.

She said since Usop was now too old to continue farming, they had to depend very much on their children.

Minah hoped DAP would look into the welfare of poor people like them.

Shopper Liong Loy Ting, 80, was also pleasantly surprised when Sarawak DAP chairman Wong Ho Leng gave her a cupcake and wished her a “Happy Mother’s Day”.

“I am very happy to receive the gift as today (yesterday) is a very important day for all mothers,” said the mother of eight children.

Member of Parliament for Lanang Alice Lau, who was the organising chairman of the event, said they prepared 2,000 cupcakes to be presented to parents.

“Although today (yesterday) is Mother’s Day, we are using the occasion to celebrate Parents’ Day too,” she said.

It was also to show their appreciation to voters especially women for their support during the just-concluded 13th general election.

A similar project would be held in June, this time for fathers, she said.
