Team-building session part of Selangor’s Malaysia Games squad training

SELANGOR, considered the kingpins of the Malaysia Games, are in the final lap of their preparations for this year’s games at the National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur.

Selangor State Sports Council (MSNS) chairman Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi said they would be taking part in all 20 sports in the Malaysia Games from June 29 to July 9.

“We have another two months. All the respective state sports associations have doubled their efforts to prepare their teams for the Malaysia Games. We have also been monitoring their training programmes as well as competitions,” said Dr Ahmad after handing over appointment letters to the team managers.

Selangor will be represented in body building, handball, netball, basketball, beach football, volleyball, beach volleyball, equestrian, futsal, artistic gymnastics, judo, kabaddi, cricket, fencing, canoeing, muay thai, table tennis, water-polo, rugby, synchronised swimming, silambam, softball and woodball.

Selangor Cricket Association vice-president N. Rasanayagam said they had assembled a strong training squad for the Malaysia Games.

“The players are undergoing weekly training sessions at the Kinrara Oval. They have also been involved in several age-group competitions. We are confident of putting a strong challenge in the Malaysia Games. The players are also showing a lot of commitment and we are looking forward to an impressive result,” said Rasanayagam.

Selangor handball team manager Chan Ah Choy said they had started preparations early.

“We had a series of selection trials to identify the players. The current training sessions are held in a school in Taman Medan on weekends,” said Ah Choy.

MSNS executive director Shamsul Shahril Badliza Mohd Noor said they had appointed co-ordinators for all the 20 sports.

“The co-ordinators will be responsible in assisting the respective teams under their care, in terms of training as well as other matters pertaining to their preparations for the Malaysia Games.

“The teams are receptive to this arrangement. The co-ordinators will also take charge in ensuring the teams’ needs are taken care. We have received encouraging feedback from the state associations. The relationship between the state associations and the MSNS will be cordial,” said Shamsul Shahril.

The MSNS have appointed local councils as “godfathers’’ for the sports.

Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) will be taking charge of water polo and synchronised swimming; Petaling Jaya City Council (rugby and softball); Klang Municipal Council (kabaddi and table tennis); Selayang Municipal Council (netball and muay thai); Kajang Municipal Council (gymnastics and equestrian); Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (judo and woodball); Subang Jaya Municipal Council (futsal and cricket); Sepang Municipal Council (canoeing and fencing); Kuala Langat District Council (handball and beach football); Kuala Selangor District Council (basketball); Hulu Selangor District Council (silambam) and Sabak Bernam District Council (body building).

Shamsul Shahril said the local councils would be responsible for the teams’ logistical needs.

“They will be helping the respective teams with transport arrangements. They will be present at the venues to cheer the teams to victory,” added Shamsul Shahril.

The MSNS will also be organising a team-building session for the Selangor contingent in early June.
