Art competition winner presents first solo exhibition
NN GALLERY has collaborated with Nando’s Malaysia to present the first solo exhibition by Novia Shin Pui San — Not So Long Ago — which is currently showcased at Publika, Solaris Dutamas until June 9.
Shin was the grand-prize winner of last year’s Peri-fy Your Art Competition, an annual art competition organised by Nando’s Malaysia and NN Gallery.
This is the second year where the grand prize winner, with full support from Nando’s Malaysia, will have the chance to showcase their works.
Shin presents an installation of three-dimensional works, made from assemblages of street scenes and shophouses in watercolour as well as a series of interactive wooden toys.
Her works attempt to tell stories as well as rekindle personal memories as she journeys throughout Malaysia.
As one weaves in and out of her works, a sense of nostalgia and discovery is prevalent.
Influenced by renowned Japanese animation director Hayao Miyazaki, Shin wants her works to be seen as if they are like panoramic boxes that move and tell stories which resonate with the audience.
The Peri-fy Your Art competition is a corporate social responsibility campaign aimed at promoting the local art scene and to nurture budding artists in the country.
With so many great talents yet to be unearthed, Nando’s believes that through such competitions, it can offer young talents a good platform to showcase their creativity, get recognised and possibly become future great names in the art scene.
Over the past five years, the competition has gained popularity with entries coming from notable institutes of higher learning in the country such as Universiti Teknologi Mara, Malaysian Institute of Art, Lim Kok Wing University of Creative Technology, Dasein Academy of Art and the Equator Academy of Art.
