THE sound of paintballs, bursting rapidly echoed throughout Ipoh Padang as opposing teams battled it out during the inaugural Malaysian Perak Paintball League Datuk Bandar Cup.

About 30 teams from all over Malaysia took part in the two-day competition, which was opened by Ipoh City Council secretary Datuk Abdul Rahim Md Ariff on Saturday.

The competition was jointly organised by the city council and Hitt Paintball Resources in conjunction with the city council’s 25th anniversary celebration this year.

Segmented into two categories, Open and Division 4, all team members were fully fitted with protection goggles and gears, took to the inflatable “battleground” in the centre of the field and tried to outgun each other to win the coveted trophy.

League chairman Benz Wong said the open category was for teams with electronical markers and it was open to all level of participants, from amateurs to semi-professionals.

“The electronical marker can shoot up to 12 paintballs per round.

“In the Division 4 category, participants used a mechanical marker that shoots one paintball per trigger,” said Wong, who is also Hitt Paintball Resources director.

“We have eight teams taking part in the Open category and 22 teams for the Division 4 category,” he added.

Wong said winner for the Open category would win RM3,000, a trophy and medals, followed by RM2,000 in second place and RM1,000 for third.

For the Division 4 category, Wong said the winner wins RM2,000, a trophy and medals.

“The second place winner takes home RM1,200 and RM800 for third place winners,” he added.

Wong said the competition was the second series of four leagues that would be played in 2013, with the first series held earlier this year at Waterfront City near Bukit Merah, Menglembu.

Abdul Rahim said paintball has the potential to grow and expand as one of the extreme sport events for Ipoh.

“The trend to play this sport is slowly picking up and I hope more events such as this can held.

“It needs more exposure to be turned into a more popular game,” Abdul Rahim said, adding that the event could be an annual event in Ipoh.
