Couple upset over baby’s death

Lee Sing Loong, 39, said his one-year-old daughter Lee Ying En was admitted to the hospital multiple times since April 3 after she developed high fever and coughing.
“However, the doctors at HTAA could not provide an answer as to what was wrong. My wife and I were only told that our daughter would get well on her own,” he said at the hospital’s mortuary here yesterday.
Lee said Ying En’s condition worsened last Monday, so he took her to a private hospital for a second opinion.
“It was only after an X-ray was performed on our daughter that we found out she had a lung infection.
“We took Ying En back to HTAA because it would be very expensive to get her treated at a private hospital,” said the lorry driver.
Lee said Ying En was admitted to HTAA’s intensive care unit on May 9 but her condition did not improve and she died at 7.22am on Sunday.
The cause of death given was acute respiratory distress syndrome due to pneumonia.
Lee then lodged a police report, demanding a post-mortem be performed as he was not satisfied with the treatment given to his daughter.
“We want to know why our daughter’s illness was not diagnosed earlier. When we found out she had a lung infection, it was already too late,” he said.
Teruntum assemblyman Sim Chon Siang said he would seek an explanation from the hospital’s director once the post-mortem results are out.
“The parents have a right to know what really happened and this would also help prevent a recurrence,” he said.
HTAA could not be reached for comment.
