Police making good progress in Shaharuddin murder case

YAN: Police are confident that the 56-year-old man arrested in connection with the murder of Customs deputy director-general Datuk Shaharuddin Ibrahim will be able to shed light into the shooting.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar said police were making good progress on the case.

“We view the case seriously as it involves an attempt to cause fear among civil servants,” he told reporters after launching the new Yan district police headquarters and a multi-purpose hall here yesterday.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohamad Salleh had said that the man was arrested by a special task force in Petaling Jaya at about 8.30am on Saturday.

Known as a no-nonsense law enforcement officer, Shaharuddin, who headed the Customs and Internal Tax Unit division, was a year away from retirement when he was shot on April 26 in Putrajaya.

Over 35 people had since been questioned by police in connection with the murder.

On another matter, Ismail urged Malaysians to respect the country’s democratic practice and not instill hate among its multiracial communities.

He said since the voters had already made their choice in the recent general election, it was important to allow the Parliament to sit.

“We do not want our administrative system to be attacked by actions that are against the country’s constitution. We have been closely monitoring the public rallies and we will not hesitate to take action against parties and individuals instigating hate and chaos.

“Anyone wishing to hold a rally must do it peacefully and according to the country’s law,” he added.
