Association: Taxis should have machines to print receipts

SEPANG: City taxi drivers picking up passengers from the KL International Airport should be equipped with machines to print receipts to prevent overcharging, said a taxi association.

Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Taxi and Rental Car Operators Association president Datuk Aslah Abdullah said this would allow taxi meters to be tracked with integrity.

The association, he said, had also agreed in principle to only allow city taxis of the Proton Exora, Proton Persona and Proton Waja models to pick up passengers from KLIA.

“The boot space of these car models is bigger and will be able to accommodate large luggage. As for the printed receipt machines, if you cannot comply with this, then it will be difficult to control those who may overcharge,” said Aslah.

Taxi driver Danny Cheng, who has been in the trade for nine years, said allowing city taxis to pick up passengers at KLIA was a good idea as they no longer had to make the empty trip back.

“In a way, it will help us to earn back our dues for the trip to the airport, which can easily take up at least three hours of our time,” said Cheng, who makes trips to KLIA about five times weekly.

Writer Sandra Tee, 28, hoped the new system would reduce the long wait at the taxi queues in the airport.

“I have waited up to an hour for a taxi at the KLIA. It can get weary, especially after getting off a flight at odd hours. Hopefully, with budget taxis coming in, it will also be more economical for consumers,” said Tee.
