JOHOR BARU: Permas state assemblyman Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin was sworn in as the 15th Johor Mentri Besar at a ceremony held at Bukit Timbalan here Tuesday.

Mohamed Khaled, who was the former Higher Education Minister, replaces Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman, who was the state Mentri Besar for the past 18 years.

The ceremony was conducted in the presence of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar.

Nine assemblymen, including MCA national organising secretary and Pulai Sebatang assemblyman Datuk Tee Siew Kiong, were also sworn in as Johor executive councillors during the ceremony.

This was despite a directive from the MCA stating that they would not accept any government positions as the party had performed worse in the May 5 polls than the 2008 general election.

Tee has been put in charge of the Tourism, Domestic Trade and Consumerism portfolio.

Only two former councillors, namely Asiah Md Ariff (Women and Family exco) and Md Jais Sarday (Development, Entrepreneurship and Cooperatives exco) have been retained in the line-up.

The other councillors are Datuk Hasni Mohammad (Public Works Rural and Regional Development exco), R. Vidyanathan (Unity and Human Resources exco), Abd Mutalip Abd Rahim (Religious exco), Datuk Abdul Latiff Bandi (Housing and Local Government exco), Ismail Mohamed (Agriculture and Agro Based Industries exco) and Datuk Zulkarnain Kamisan (Youth, Sports, Culture and Heritage exco).
