KUALA LUMPUR: A group of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) has demanded that members of the Election Commission (EC) resign over alleged irregularities in the May 5 general election.

Calling itself the Coalition on Plan of Action for Malaysia (GBM), the 25-member group claimed that the EC had failed to perform its task in managing the general election.

"We feel that the public has lost confidence on the election process. If the EC is professional, they should resign," said Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall president Tan Yew Sing.

The GBM also comprises civil societies such as the Muslim Professionals Forum, Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) and the National Indian Action Team (NIAT).

Ikram Association Malaysia secretary-general Zaid Kamaruddin said officials in developed countries would often resign after scandals or major accidents.

"Those who do that there have high levels of dignity. So to ask them (the EC) is a reasonable request," he said.

The group also demanded for the EC to be made independent and to be accountable to Parliament, instead of coming under the Prime Minister's Department.

It also called for the electoral roll to be cleaned, and for the re-delineation of Malaysia's constituencies to be done fairly.

The EC is expected to conduct the re-delineation exercise by the end of the year, after the six-month period allotted to the election petition hearing process.

The process will take place after the GE13 results are gazetted.
