Blogger Milo Suam detained over website postings
By RASHITHA A. HAMID
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested a 29-year-old blogger for posting two articles, one of them a classified document under the Official Secrets Act and the other contributing to public mischief.
Yusuf Al-Siddique Suratman, who blogs as Milo Suam, was arrested near a hypermarket at Setia Alam early Thursday.
Federal Commercial Crime director Comm Datuk Syed Ismail Syed Azizan said there were two reports lodged against Yusuf.
He said the reports were lodged by policemen in the Kota Kinabalu International Airport and Jalan Tun Razak police stations.
The first report was over a post on the website on Ops Daulat.
"It was a letter sent out to all district police chiefs in Sabah on security measures during the incursion by Sulu militants," he told a press conference here Thursday.
On the same website, the blogger also posted an article claiming police had done early voting, which was untrue.
Comm Syed Ismail said no policemen did early voting but there was a possibility some had done postal voting.
Police are investigating how Yusuf managed to get the copy of the letter sent to the OCPDs as it was classified as secret.
"We have remanded him until tomorrow (Friday) to assist us in our investigations," he added.
Yusuf is being investigated under Section 8(1)(e) of the Official Secrets Act for publishing an official secret inaccurately or falsely and Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for making statements contributing to public mischief.
Comm Syed Ismail advised bloggers and public to be ethical on their postings and not to spread false information that could jeopardise the country's peace.
