KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar has warned irresponsible groups not to incite anger over the issue of phantom voters.

“Do not think that we will not take action. If there are phantom voters, of course, we will detain them,” he told a press conference at Bukit Aman yesterday.

Commenting on allegations that busloads of phantom voters had been ferried to Kulaijaya on Saturday night, Khalid confirmed that the passengers were Rela members.

He added that police were also working with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to identify those who spread news and rumours via SMS.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar rubbished postings on Facebook claiming that truckloads of foreigners protected by police were brought in to vote at a “Convent High School” as well as other places

He also confirmed that PKR's Rafizi Ramli had lodged a police report about the presence of phantom voters in Ampang.

Ismail added that the election process proceeded smoothly up to the end of polling at 5pm.

In Petaling Jaya, the National Registration Department's database confirmed that R. Rameish @ Ramalingam, from Pahang, was legally registered as a Malaysian.

“The misconception by the public that he is a Bangladesh national is purely based on his physical appearance,” said NRD director Datuk Jariah Mohd Said in a press release on Sunday.
