Long-serving Mentri Besar Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat, 82 is retiring after successfully leading Kelantan PAS yesterday to its sixth term as the state government since 1990. KOTA BARU: Former Kelantan Deputy Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob took the oath of office as Mentri Besar before the Kelantan Sultan Muhammad V, at Istana Negeri Kubang Kerian here Monday.
Ahmad, 63, who won the Pasir Pekan state seat, replaced Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, who was Mentri Besar for 23 years.
Panchor Assemblyman Datuk Nik Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah took the oath of office as Kelantan Deputy Mentri Besar.
The ceremony, which began at 6pm, was also attended by the Tengku Mahkota of Kelantan Tengku Dr Muhammad Faiz Petra, the Kelantan Mufti Datuk Shukri Mohamad and the State Police Chief Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman.
Earlier, it was reported that Nik Aziz, 82, was retiring after successfully leading Kelantan PAS to its sixth term as the state government since 1990.
PAS secured 32 out of the 45 state seats which were up for grabs in the 13th general election Sunday.
It is learnt that Nik Aziz had been advised to take extra care of his health, although he is likely to remain PAS spiritual adviser.
However, the ascent of Ahmad to the top post has also created a ripple as it is learnt that PAS vice-president Datuk Husam Musa's name was missing from the list of those recommended to become state exco members.
Husam lost in his bid to win the Putrajaya parliamentary seat, but easily won his Salor state seat.
Once touted as a future MB, Husam was previously considered a favourite of Nik Aziz.
