KUCHING: SMK St Thomas and SM Lodge emerged champions of the RHB-The Star Mighty Minds Sarawak state challenge, winning the upper secondary level and lower secondary level, respectively.
Both teams received RM2,000 cash and will represent the state in the national challenge, which will be held in the Klang Valley from Oct 12 to 13.
SM Lodge came second in the upper secondary level, beating SM St Joseph.
In the lower secondary level, SM Batu Lintang came in second and SM St Joseph came in third.
What a feeling: Students from SMK St Thomas celebrating after winning the upper secondary state-level Mighty Minds Challenge in Kuching. Second place winners of both categories received RM1,000 while third place winners received RM750.
The all-day event saw as many as 31 schools taking part with the teams tested in three different categories: multiple choice questions (MCQ), hands-on challenge and buzzer quiz challenge.
“The participants were tested more on general knowledge in the MCQ challenge unlike the previous years where we had more science and maths questions,” said Nithya Sidhu, the head judge of the Mighty Minds challenge.
Only 10 teams were chosen to go into the hands-on round.
The round tested participants in problem-solving.
“The hands-on challenge is the best part of this competition as it nurtures creativity,” said regional director of RHB Sarawak, Johanna Abdullah.
All smiles: Members of the SM Lodge all-girls team jumping for joy after being announced the winner of the lower secondary category. The top five teams from the creativity challenge were then tested in the buzzer quiz challenge.
“The participants this year are very creative but show a slight lack in the general knowledge section. Those who managed to answer well are usually those who read a lot on general happenings,” said The Star Sarawak editor M. Rajah at the prize-giving ceremony.
The Mighty Minds challenge is jointly organised by Star Publications (M) Bhd and RHB Banking Group.
The competition will be held in 14 states before all the champions head to Kuala Lumpur for the National Finals in October.
