IPOH: Former Wanita Umno deputy chief Datuk Kamilia Ibrahim, who went against the Barisan Nasional leadership's decision and stood as an Independent in Kuala Kangsar, did not only fail to make any impact but also lost her deposit.

Kamilia, who was sacked by Umno soon after she handed her nomination paper on April 20, only managed to get 447 votes in a three-cornered fight for the seat previously held by former Wanita Umno chief Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz.

Kamilia was in fact a long-time Rafidah representative in Kuala Kangsar before the two had a fall out after the wing's 2008 election.

The lawyer turned politician lost to Datuk Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad of Barisan who won the seat with 14,218 votes and PAS candidate Khalil Idham Lim Abdullah who secured 13,136 votes.

Wan Mohammad Khair-il said Kamilia “knew what she was getting into when she decided to challenge Barisan chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's decision not to field her there”.

“Still, she went in and tried to be a game-changer,” he said.

Apart from Kamilia, six other Independent candidates who stood in parliamentary seats also lost their deposits.

Twenty others who stood as Independents in state seats and PSM's Sarasvathy Muthu, who stood in the Jelapang state seat, also lost their deposits.

Under the Election Commission Act, candidates will lose the RM10,000 deposit (in a parliamentary seat) or RM5,000 (state seat) if they failed to secure at least one eighth or 12.5% of the total number of votes polled.
